Torontech employs a bidirectional moving crosshead which can be used to perform both tension and compression (Crush) tests on optical cables; it also has an extensometer which is used to measure the elongation strain for optical cable under tension.
In tensile test, the cable is wound in the machine over appropriately sized sheaves. The cable is pulled at a specified rate until a pre-determined tension is applied. The cable is laid to rest under tension as per detail specifications, and then the attenuation and fiber length are measured.
The plate is mounted on the bottom of moveable crosshead which allows a sample of cable to be crushed between a flat steel base plate and movable steel plate which applies the crushing force uniformly over a 100 mm length of the sample.

Strain Measurement Accuracy:
±0.5% of reading to 1/50 of full scale with most ASTM E83 class B or ISO 9513 class 0.5 extensometers meets or exceeds ASTM E83, ISO 9513, and EN 10002-4.
